Ubuntu 9.1 Freezes entire machine

When I am working with Ubuntu 9.1 the machine will completely lock up. Keyboard and mouse are frozen and I must power off and reboot the system in order to get things running again. It seems to happen most often while Firefox is running on the system. I also noticed that it occurs after several minutes of inactivity on the system but again usually Firefox is up at the time of inactivity. Is there a solution to this problem?

May also be a swap problem John.
