I have no idea on what Verizon Fios is.

Tried looking at Verizon website and I'm not quite sure.
Can you elaborate what you're going to do?

Fios is an internet-over-cabletv system that uses a fiber optic cable

Ask verizon if they support a wireless gateway or home router -- that you want to use your laptop with Fios
from around the house without a cord attached.

(I suspect they do, but I dont know).

Once the home router is set up, either run an ethernet cable from it to your linux computer or set up wireless in your linux computer and you should be fine.

Thank you for your response. I am trying to head off any problems before I discontinue my DSL line and have them install fiber. This is somewhat of a gray area for me so please excuse any dumb questions. When the router is installed, will I still a modem?

If you mean a cable modem, I don't know, but I suspect so.

Keep in mind a cable modem is different than a telephone modem. None of these systems use a telephone modem, which is only used for dialup internet.

I have ordinary cable TV internet; there is a cable modem that connects the cable line to an ethernet line; then after that is a home router (like a LinkSys or a DLink that you might see at Best Buy). The cable modem decipher's the cable companies signal. I would think FIOS needs something similar.

I have decided to have the fiber optics installed, but I will keep my copper DSL line active until all goes well. Many thanks for your input.
