Sound Card Not Working: NeoMagic NM3298 on Ubuntu 7.04

Asked by SteveLW

Dear Ubuntu Community:

I have installed Ubuntu 7.04 on an old laptop for a friend. It's a "legacy" Dell Inspiron 3500 with a NeoMagic NM3298 sound card. Ubuntu does not recognize the sound card, therefore ... silence.

Are drivers available for this sound card for Linux? How would I install them?

Thanks,

Steve

No linux drivers I know of exists:

Try running modprobe nm256, and see if you get sound.

modprobe nm256

PRODUCES message:

FATAL: Module nm256 not found.

HOWEVER,

modprobe snd- nm256

PRODUCES no error message.

Still no sound even with reboot, but the fact that no error message appears with the second command may suggest that a driver exists on my machine ??

Yes, you can check it is loaded with an lsmod command. Indeed you have to prefix it with snd- as this is an alsa module.
It was just a try, I was not expecting it to work, but, you never know; these neomagic cards are really not supported properly in alsa.

Can you help with this problem?
