Thermal overheat

Asked by oddvar

Both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 unexpectedly shut down for overheating. This has never been a problem before with my relatively new desktop running Pentium D and Nvidia gforce 8600 graphic card. Earlier my computer has been on overnight while downloading but now it just shut off.
What have happened to Ubuntu, and how can this be fixed? I tried the solution for my
/etc/modules

battery
ac
thermal
processor
acpi-cpufreq
cpufreq-userspace

but it makes no difference

In case it's a hardware issue and still has guarantee, consider a repair.

Options:
Take a look in log files such as Xorg.0.log and syslog for related error messages.
##e.g. Unable to turn cooling device on

Check BIOS power settings, e.g. cool&quiet, or default dynamically best performance.

This is not a hardware issue. It is a new bug from Ubuntu 9.10.

oddvar, which driver are you using? NVidia has just released a new driver that you may want to try out.

No, oddvar, I didn't ask which graphics card you are running, but rather, which *driver* you are using to run your graphics card. If you are using the binaries from NVidia, you need to file a bug report against nvidia-graphics-driver package (and subscribe me to it), so that I can get NVidia's attention. I have another bug report with a similar graphics card to also file with NVidia.

On the other hand, if you are using the default drivers that came with the default install of Ubuntu, you need to file a bug report against linux (Ubuntu).
