9.10 hangs on boot after prefetch

Asked by Jase

Installed the latest 9.10 ubuntu over my ailing dell inspiron 2650 over xp installation using LiveCD. Didn't mess with the partitions, just installed Ubuntu using the whole of the drive. After the installer completed, it asked for a reboot -

Now the GNU Grub v 1.97beta loader runs and shows me the grub loader menu. If I select the "Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode) the last message reads 0.151136 pci 0000:00:1e.0 PREFETCH WINDOW 0x20000000-0x25ffffff. After this the system hangs (no caps lock light etc)

Is this meaningful? What should happen next?

I can get to the Grub SH command line and Ive tried a few things eg ACPI=off but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone help? What should I try? I'm a Ubuntu/Linux newbie but I'm not afraid of the command line.

Hi Jase

It seems you encountered a known bug:

see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/399844
you might probably post also a reaction there,

The workaround at the moment seems to add the kernelparameter: pci=noacpi
