Doesn't read audio-CD

I have Xubuntu 9.04 installed. When entering an audio-cd, no icon appears on the desktop, can't read audio-cd's.
No problem reading cd-r.

I have the identical problem with 9.10. A data CD works fine but when I put an audio CD into the drive, the drive symbol disappears from the screen and no way to play it.

Same here, but in 10.04. CD-RW Drive and DVD-ROM both suffer from "Audio CD disease". I can play Video DVDs in the DVD-ROM and mount Data CDs in both. Have tried the "disable polling" trick also.
