Which version to download for intel E8400 system ?

Which Ubuntu distribution to use on a intel E8400 system. I am certain I want the desktop version, it is an intel cpu. so the i386 seems to be the correct choice. however when 64bit is ticked the amd64 distribution is selected.

Both versions will work.

If you do not know of any benefits with using 64-bit (like if you have more than 3Gb RAM in your system) use the i386 version.
