add/remove apps doesn't recognize CD

Asked by Peter Payzant

I'm trying to add the Ndiswrapper drive installation tool using the Add/Remove Applications tool. The "Downloading package files" window appears, and then a dialogue asking me to insert the disk labelled Ubuntu 7.04 _Feisty Fawn_-Release i386 (20070415) in drive /cdrom/.

I insert the CD containing the 7.04 image which I downloaded (and from which I installed the system), and then click "OK". There is a pause with the system accessing the CD drive, then the dialogue returns, asking me to insert the CD. It appears that the Add/Remove Applications tool doesn't like something about my CD.

Any thoughts? Does the CD need to have a specific label, for example?

What type of error is returned?

Maybe using the Preferences, go to third party packages, click on add cdrom will help.

Also, /etc/apt/sources.list should have a line like:
deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 7.04 _Feisty Fawn_ - Release i386 (20070415)]/ feisty main restricted

No error message was returned - the dialogue box asking me to insert the CD disappeared after I clicked "OK", there was some CD activity, and the dialogue box reappeared.

However, your first suggestion "using the Preferences, go to third party packages, click on add cdrom" seems to have done the trick - after doing that, I was able to install the software. Strangely, no CD activity took place this time.

Thanks!
