cannot shut down PC in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by andrewszepessy

Shut Down procedure fails & following explanation is offered: Booting ' Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6. 31-14- generic' Ubuntu 9.10 ubuntu tty1 Filesystem type is ntfs, partition type 0x07 ubuntu login: (4118.788106) Buffer I/O error in device loop0, logical block 11
3371L Linux-bzImage, set up = 0x3400, size= 0x3b26e01

(4150.644332) Buffer I/O error on device loop0, logical block 1005695

NOTA BENE: The brackets used in the message on the screen are, of course, square barckets. I only use standard brackets here because I am using a Hungarian keyboard, whci does not have square brackets.

The above error message remains until I run out of patience & use the only method that seems to work for getting out of this situation - that is: restarting with Soft Restart button, logging into Windows & then Shutting Down in Windows. Naturally, this is slow & irritating. What must I do to be able to SHUT DOWN in Ubuntu?

Are you using Wubi to run Ubuntu on top of Windows? If so, Windows is controlling the system and likely won't let Ubuntu take over the system to perform a normal shutdown.

You may wish to consider running Ubuntu on its own (fully installed), or alternatively using VirtualBox, which will let you run Ubuntu as a virtual machine.

Cheers,

Dear Randall in Vancouver, many thanks for helping me with my problem.
Regrettably, I don't really know whether I'm using Wubi or not. Before
updating to Ubuntu 9.10, I was using Kiwilinux, a version developed for use
in Rumania, but also used by Hungarian speakers both in Rumania & Hungary. I
updated, not because I was unhappy with Kiwilinux, but because it refused to
run Skype for me. However, it did let me Shut Down my PC. Now, with Ubuntu,
I have great Skyping, but no Shut Down.

This is in no way related to firefox. Why have you related the question to firefox?

Terribly sorry - no, nothing to do with Firefox - It is Ubuntu which does
not let me shut down my PC.

There is another way to shut down the computer when using Ubuntu though it is not "elegant." Go into System -> Preferences -> Power Management -> General and, under the option "When the power button is pressed" select "Shutdown."

Then to turn off the computer from Ubuntu, you need only press and hold the power button until the shutdown procedure begins. This works perfectly and does not cause any harm to your computer or any of its programs.

Thanks again - I would, of course, prefer to just press Shut Down, but at least I can now avoid restarting & going back into Windows.
