Install 7.10 gone wrong

Asked by art

I thought I could get away with trying the new 7.10 version but I think I made a rookie mistake - and I think it was a fatal one.

I created a live CD and booted from that. I booted from that and everything seemed fine. I decided to go for the install.

I had read that the manual partition didn't work so I selected the middle one (the top two were both labeled as "guided" but I can't remember what the difference was).

I didn't really get guided. I was told that there was a certain amount of space available (I also have Ubuntu7.04 and XP on this machine) so I said go for it.

Once the install was done I tried booting - no go, some grub error.. I boot from the live cd again and use Gparted to look at the disk.

The whole disk is one big ext3 partition!

Is this behavior normal (the whole disk being repartitioned)? Is there a chance this is reversible?

well, if you used the guided partition its not normal at all. However if you used manual partitioning you could have made a mistake

No, it's not reversible.

A lesson learned I suspect.

The page I got the d/l from warned about the manual option not working so I didn't use that. After running a disk integrity check there were two files found to be "bad".

If I may make a suggestion - prompting the user to check the disk integrity before install would be a kind thing.

Perhaps adding a final OK on the disk partition process would help as well. The messages I received led me to believe all was well. I was not informed the entire disk would be used. On the contrary, I was informed only a few Gig would be partitioned.

I love Ubuntu, but this is pretty devastating.
