vnc4server at uBuntu 9.10 Karmic

Asked by BingJiun on 2009-11-10

How to setup vnc4sever at uBuntu 9.10?

Many teaching website does not reflect the 9.10 version. For example: I can't find some files as told, like: /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to enable RemoteGreeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmlogin

I also can't find "Login Window" to change "Remote login disabled" to "Same as Local".

I think you'll have to do with /etc/gdm/custom.conf file and other files form /etc/gdm/ directory.

More details about configuration here: http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.28/gdm.html#configuration

Good luck.

I already solved the problem. Using vnc4server is much easier than I think.

1) setup your password:

bjluo@bjluo-desktop:~$ vncpasswd .vncpasswd
Password:
Verify:

3) modify the /home/bjluo/.vnc/xstartup. This file actually is automatically created when you first run "vnc4sever",
but you need to change to "gnome-session &". Otherwise, you will get all grey screen.

#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
gnome-session &

3) Run vnc4server with port number 1.

bjluo@bjluo-desktop:~$ vnc4server :1

New 'bjluo-desktop:1 (bjluo)' desktop is bjluo-desktop:1

Starting applications specified in /home/bjluo/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/bjluo/.vnc/bjluo-desktop:1.log

4) Everthing is done. You can use vncviewer to connect the dektop which run vncserver.

well I tried those steps and it looks like I need a stdc++ lib that I can find:
vncserver@PCMServer:~$ vncpasswd .vncpasswd
vncpasswd: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
server@PCMServer:~$

any suggestions.
