Booted Karmic from .iso. Cannot now restore files backed up when using upgrade version of Karmic.

Asked by RayArdia

I upgraded Jaunty-Karmic but had sound problems which I couldn't solve. Decided to download Karmic .iso, and after backing up my Home folder using File Backup Manager, I booted Karmic from the .iso disc.
I now can't restore files (from an external hard disc) because I am unable to install File Backup Manager. When I try the Software Centre I get the message below:

File Backup Manager
Not available in the current data

If I can't use this program, how can I restore from the external disk?

What is the 'real' name of 'File Backup Manager', the package name?

Don't have any way of finding the 'real name'. I THINK the .tar.gz might be backup-manager-0.7.8.tar.gz but that's only because a search revealed site http://www.backup-manager.org/ which (I'm guessing!)MAY be the correct one.
I thought by backing up my file system, about 30.5GB I would be able to restore all my important files, eg Evolution, Documents and my /c drive, but I seem to have screwed things up completly.

backup-manager Version: 0.7.8-1ubuntu1 (universe/admin) is a CLI-tool:
aptitude show backup-manager

So if that is the one you can download it via package manager.
However, if it just created archives it should be possible to only unpack them.
Well, I guess you know better how to use it.

After loading aptitude I eventually got this:-

ray@ray-laptop:~$ aptitude show backup-manager
E: Unable to locate package backup-manager
ray@ray-laptop:~$ aptitude show backup-manager
Package: backup-manager
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 0.7.8-1ubuntu1
Priority: optional
Section: universe/admin
Maintainer: Ubuntu MOTU Developers <email address hidden>
Uncompressed Size: 655k
Depends: debconf (>= 0.5) | debconf-2.0, gzip (>= 1.3), ucf (>= 0.08), findutils
         (>= 4.2.28-1)
Suggests: zip, libnet-perl, perl, perl-modules, openssh-client, wodim,
          genisoimage, gettext-base, anacron, dvd+rw-tools, dar,
          libfile-slurp-perl, libnet-amazon-s3-perl
Description: command-line backup tool
This is a backup program, designed to help you make daily archives of your file
 system.

Written in bash and perl, it can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, and zip archives
and can be run in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Other
archives are possible: MySQL or SVN dumps, incremental backups...

Archives are kept for a given number of days and the upload system can use FTP,
SSH or RSYNC to transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts.

Automatically burning archives to removable media such as CD or DVD is also
 possible.

The configuration file is very simple and basic and gettext is used for
 internationalization.

ray@ray-laptop:~$

My next question is ¿how do I open the application and use it?
Presumably, because Backup-Manager isn't showing in Applications or in System Prefs or Admin - where I recall it sitting when I used it under the upgrade version of Karmic, I have to run it from Terminal, but I don't know how to do that.
¿May I have a bit more assistance please?

Ok, since you don't know how to use it, you didn't make a backup with it before, hence you did backup your files with something else. As in your first post you were just guessing it's this one.
Acutally there are some backup GUIs, the question is which one you used to backup your files.
Maybe you recognize any GUI from here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem/TAR
or search with Synaptic.
##Usually after download CLI tools don't appear in applications menu if they don't have a graphical frontend (GUI), they need to be started in a terminal.

Sam, thanks again.
Re your comment:-'Ok, since you don't know how to use it, you didn't make a backup with it before, hence you did backup your files with something else. As in your first post you were just guessing it's this one.'
I have to answer that I DID know how to use it (via System Administration) when I used it to make the backup (which really does exist, some 30,3GB) on my Phillips external disk. I do have backup-manager in my /home/ray directory. What I DON'T know is how to run it from terminal.
I really don't think I've been guessing, even though I'd be the first to admit that I'm no computer whiz-kid. Come to think of it, at 72, not a kid any more!
Please be patient a little longer for whilst I know that in trying to sort out one problem, I gave myself this new one but still need a bit of help to sort things out.

Further to my last post, a few moments ago, out of curiosity I searched again on Software Centre for 'backup-manager' and File Backup Manager came up! Detail is at:-
http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/pybackpack
After downloading it is to be found listed as File Backup Manager (FBM) under System Administration.
My backup is /media/Philips External Hard Disk/File System Full and is much bigger than I reported previously at 72.9GB.
When I open FBM and select the Restore tab the backup file is listed as /media/Philips%20External%20Hard%20Disk/File%20System%20Full. Can't select the restore button as it is 'greyed-out'.
I took screenshot of the 'About FBM' and the FBM Restore screen but can't seem to display them here. Links are:-
/home/ray/Desktop/Screenshot-About Pybackpack.png
/home/ray/Desktop/Screenshot-File Backup Manager.png
Tried the pybackpack website to get some help, or to report a bug but can't get a log-in.

Ray, sorry to disagree, but these are two different apps.

recall your first post:
>...a search revealed site http://www.backup-manager.org/ which (I'm guessing!)MAY be the correct one.<

As I mentioned, aptitude and the page reveals 'backup-manager' is a CLI tool only.
>Versatile Command Line Backup Tool for GNU/Linux<

Pybackpack is a frontend based on rdiff-backup:
http://rdiff-backup.nongnu.org/

>much bigger than I reported previously at 72.9GB.

And yes, it's a 'very' easy backup frontend, because it doesn't care if there is enough space left for either storage media or temporary disk space. Hence it doesn't offer enhancements of rdiff-backup CLI.

However, make sure you have permissions to extract files and in any case as mentioned before you can extract manually files from within the directory. I wouldn't recommend anyway to restore the whole incremental backup in order to avoid conflicts. (Karmic has huge changes)
Maybe also you need to tell the configuration GUI somewhere it's an external disk for recognition.

btw. to show screenshots here they need to be uploaded on external pages and the link provided here.

I'm now thoroughly confused, but going along with your experienced deductions I have removed the Pybackpack file and 're?'-downloaded Backup-Manager 0.6.3 from http://www.backup-manager.org/
File Browser looks like this:-
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/BackupManager
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/contrib
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/doc
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/lib
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/man
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/po
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/t
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/AUTHORS
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/backup-manager
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/backup-manager.conf.tpl
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/backup-manager-upload
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/ChangeLog
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/COPYING
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/INSTALL
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/Makefile
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/NEWS
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/README
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/THANKS
/home/ray/backup-manager-0.6.3/VERSION

Since I don't know how to install a CLI app, I opened INSTALL and got this:-

Dependencies:
If you want to enable the localisation, you need gettext.
Perl is needed for FTP and SSH uploads.
Everything else is written in Bash.

How to install backup-manager

~/backup-manager $
~/backup-manager $ su
~/backup-manager # make install
~/backup-manager # cp /usr/share/backup-manager/backup-manager.conf.tpl /etc/backup-manager.conf
~/backup-manager #

You can then edit /etc/backup-manager.conf to fit your needs.

Refere to the user guide for details:
http://www.backup-manager.org/documentation/user-guide/

Do I ' want to enable the localisation,'? whatever that means. Entry of the first line '~/backup-manager $' above gives:-
ray@ray-laptop:~$ ~/backup-manager $
bash: /home/ray/backup-manager: No such file or directory
ray@ray-laptop:~$
from which I assume that the app is not installed.Right or wrong? If right how do I install it please.

BTW referring to the User Guide produces 'Error 404 - Not Found'.

Ray,
since you've recognized Pybackpack
> as File Backup Manager (FBM) under System Administration.
before, it's likely the one you've made your backup with.
quote from your first post:
>backing up my Home folder using File Backup Manager

>I don't know how to install a CLI app

Don't know why you removed Pybackpack to install something else which obviously doesn't make things easier to you.
btw. the Wiki is here:
http://wiki.backup-manager.org/index.php/Main_Page#Documentation

However, it isn't a good idea to create a backup with app #1 and restore with app #2, speaking of inconsistency.
Referring to my previous post to proceed.

Sadly all attempts to retrieve my backup within Karmic have failed, so I have reverted to Jaunty where everything is as it was.
I have, however lost all backups of files on my Wine /c drive, will open another thread on this matter.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
