In my opinion you should go for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala in order to have the newer versions of all you programs and the lastest security fixes and many other new stuff,
there's 3 ways to do so, first one is via internet

1 to go to the Start System/Administration/Update Manager
2 Click the Check button to check for new updates.
3 If there are any updates to install, use the Install Updates button to install them, and press Check again after that is complete.
4 A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.
5 Click Upgrade.
6 Follow the on-screen instructions.

Or
you can download an alternate CD and:

Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the Internet.

1 Download the alternate installation CD
2 Burn the ISO to a CD and insert it into the CD-ROM drive of the computer to be upgraded.
If the ISO file is on the computer to be upgraded, you could avoid wasting a CD by mounting the ISO as a drive with a command like:

            sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0

3 A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that CD.

   1. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the following command using Alt+F2:

gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

Or
you can download a CD image from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and burn it and install it from zero, if you do this you have to backup all your personal files very carfully in order to don't lose them, because you will have to format your disks

Hope this help you.

Well, since your using a LTS version ( Long Term Support ) and the next LTS version is right around the corner, April 2010, I would suggest downloading Karmic Koala and burning it to a CD. Then boot it and try it without installing to see how it reacts to your hardware. If you like it you could back up all your important data, but you should be doing that anyway, and install it over your Hardy partition.

Your going to want to do a fresh install sooner or later to get the full benefits of any more releases of Ubuntu, with Ext4 and grub2. I run Karmic Desktop on one machine and Karmic Server on another and couldn't be happier. Very quick.

follow what wojox has said in above mail... you should know you can't upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10 with update manage... it can go one step up only. You have to do clean install of 9.10 which very easy installing with CD and back up your data in case of any problem at least you have back up.

Can you help with this problem?
