148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp wireless USB device not working in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Mohamed Kikia

I running Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop & Desktop. My laptop (3 year old Fujitsu Siemens with built in wireless) works fine with my ADSL wireless router.

I am using a Ralink USB wirelss adapter on my desktop PC (Core 2 Quad processor). I created a new network connection called "Home". When I move my mouse pointer to the the icon in the top right hand corner, the dialog box says "Wireless network connection 'Home' active", however i cannot connect to the internet. If I double click on the connection properties it shows the driver as RT2800. There is no communication with the ADSL router. When I re-boot It looks like the wireless connection does not function at all, the dialog box says " no active wireless network connections" (or something like that!). Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem is. I am currently using an ethernet cable connection to the router. The USB adapter works fine in Windows XP.

Regards

I blacklisted rt2800. Now when I boot up the wireless icon is visible (with 1 bar only!) - the ADSL router is approx 2 meters away.Pointing the mouse on the icon, I get "Wireless network connection "HOME" active: HOME (10%)" Still no coms with the router. Clicking on connection properties gives me the following:

HOME

Interface: 802.11 WiFi (raO)
Hardware address: 00:0D:09:30:22:C7
Driver: USB
Speed 1Mb/s
Security WPA/WPA2

IP Address 10:42:43:1
Broadcast address 10:42:43:255
Subnet Mask 255:255:255:0

Thanks for all the help. I did manage to get it to work eventually. After blacklisting, I clicked on the wireless icon and from the list of available wireless connections, I selected wlan-ap. It worked instantly. I now have "Auto wlan-ap" as my default network connection with 100% signal strength. Don't know why, but it works!! Once again, many thanks. The blacklisting solution works.

I just discovered that my wired connection no longer works! It worked before I blacklisted rt2800. So now my wireless connection works fine, but the wired connection no longer works.

That's a totally different issue. Blacklisting the rt2800 wireless drivers has nothing to do with your wired connection. Please keep this thread in status 'solved', as your wireless issue is solved.

Please create a separate thread for the wired connection issue using this link:
