wireless connected but no internet acces and no ping ...

Asked by Tanguy

Hello !

I have a Thinkpad R60 and I am running Ubuntu feisty on it. Since I started to use it, i never had any problems with my wireless connection until this monday. For a strange reason, I can not acces any to internet and I can not ping anything (including the router ...) but my card is nicely recognized and Network-Manager indicate that I am connected. I have tried different tricks (including the reinstallation of Network Manager or the use of wlassistant but it does not change anything.
The network I am trying to acces is not protected but I need to first introduce a login and a password in order to have acces to the network.

I have notice a strange behaviour. When I have reinstalled Network Manager, I could not find anymore "auto eth1 iface eth1 inet dhcp" in the file /etc/network/interfaces (where eth1 correspond to my wireless connection). But even if I had it manually and restart the connection, I still have no access.

Does anybody have any clue how to solve such strange problem ?

Here are some more information which my be usefull to understand the problem:

A bit magically, I found the problem.
It was a problem with the gateway which was suddenly not defined properly.
I am not sure how I manage to solve the problem:
I start to type "route" where I discover that the problem with the gateway then I just run "iptable -L" to check if there where no problems with the firewall. It was not the case (it would have been strange since I had uninstalled firestarter). Then, I just recheck "route" and the gateway appears to be correctly defined and my connection restart to work ...
I really don't get the reason of my problem but now it solved so I am happy :o)

I am on an ordinary old Dell PC 2400 with netgear wireless dongle. I cant connect to the net through GG Ubuntu, BUT I HAVE solved a WAY to get on the net... I went to my other computer running WIN-XP and got on right away. I formatted this computer and set up 2 partitions. I loaded WinXP on the first partition, with Acronis in command, and then put UBUNTU on the second. After a while, I lost the Wireless AGAIN for som odd reason, so re-booted into WinXP. I cannot get onto the net with Ubuntu, although it was BECAUSE Ubuntu had very few viruses written for it that I wanted to use it on the net in the fist place. Ah, well, back to Windows as the most reliable way to get on the net for an old guy. I will have to wait for UBUNTU to get their acts together to produce something really as easy to use as Windows is. (WIZARDS, or MAGIC things to find problems, instead of having to try and decipher DOS-TYPE euphemisms or whatever you call them. You see, UNTIL alternative systems get as good or BETTER than Windows, they can NEVER compete with them for use-ability, and that is a fact of life. The rest of the world are not DOS-literate, and need automation in error-fixing.
