Install Openoffice 3.1 in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Kayvee

How can I install Openoffice 3.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty? I checked the Openoffice Scribblers PPA but it is empty now! Is there any other PPA to install Openoffice 3.1 without upgrading to Karmic?

You can download the 3.1.1 .deb package from the openoffice.org web site

Just extract the archive, which will result in a subdir witha lots of .deb files

Open a terminal and change directory to the ones full of OOo .deb files and issue the command:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 will installa in paralell to 3.0.1 (Jaunty) in /opt

You can then add a launcher for the executable (something like soffice ) which should be in the sundirectory "program" under one of the 2 openoffice folders below /opt

You can also add it to the menus by editing them

Thank you for your reply. I posted the same question in Ubuntu Forums also and was directed to this website: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=68&start=0&sid=d9f8132ac16773bbc60d001691f987e5

That website has directions to install Openoffice using the .deb package files from Openoffice.org website. They are more or less identical to the ones you suggested, but that website also has directions to easily install the menu shortcuts without editing any menu items.
