You do not necssarily need to uninstall, but you will need to perform three upgrades: 8.04 to 8.10, 8.10 to 9.04 and finally 9.04 to 9.10. When 10.04 comes out, you will be able to upgrade directly to 10.04 from 8.04, so you may wish to wait.

There is more information on upgrading at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

I would also recommend waiting until 10.04. I am currently running 8.04 without issue. Although 9.10 has updated packages and runs a bit better, the long term support releases are very stable. In Control Center>Software Sources I have set my setting for showing new distribution releases to "Long Term Support Releases Only". This way when it is released, I will upgrade then.

I need the stability of a long term release due to my whole family uses the computer. This is why I recommend it.

To answer your question:

You do not need to do a uninstall but as mentioned before, you have a lot of upgrades to do before you get to 9.10.

I also find that the upgrade with the "alternate Installer" disk is far faster and more efficient way of upgrading. I upgraded my 7.10 release to 8.04 this way successfully. Even with a broadband, the alternate disk is faster due to the file being present locally without need for downloading.

If you really want to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10, get the alternate install CDs and upgrade that way. It will be quicker.
