There a lot of system monitor tools. If you can link to a screen shot or something it might help to identify the exact one you are thinking of. If you just want something, you can install gdesklets (application -> add/remove and search for it). It has a bunch of little desktop applets. If you use kubuntu you can install superkaramba but I don't have much experience with that. There is also adesklets but I've never tried that.

A very basic and text only system monitor that a lot of people like is conky.

http://conky.sourceforge.net/

You can install it from a terminal

sudo apt-get install conky

It requires a bit of editing on the .conkyrc file to get it how you like. You can find info on setting it up at

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205865

It's a bit outdated with respect to installing as the newest version is in the repositories, but it will help you understand about setting up the config file.

Hope that helps.

Wow, someone to a lot of trouble to make a vista lookalike. I'm not exactly sure about the system monitor but it looks a little like something from adesklets. I can't be sure if that's a gnome desktop, kde desktop or something else. I thought it was gnome but the applets look more like stuff for superkaramba. You are probably going to have to try a few things unless someone else knows for sure.

If you want to try adesklets check out the info at

http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/index.html

Take a look at some of the screen shots. You can also find info on installing it. Basically you will use synaptic and search for it and then install it. Once installed you need to add some desklets. Here is a list

http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/desklets.html

I've never actually used this so beyond this I'm not sure but I think that should get you started.

If it's superkaramba themes that app runs on KDE (I don't think it runs on gnome but I'm not 100% positive). If you are using kubuntu then you can install it and then search through it for that system monitor. I don't have KDE so I can't really say much else.

Anyway, hope that's enough info to get you going. In short, if you are using gnome - try adesklets, if kde - try superkaramba. Good luck.

Hi vinceboy.

There is also "Screenlets" (sudo aptitude install screenlets) with "Sidebar". A simple image is here: http://www.ubuntu-schweiz.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/bildschirmfoto.png. And a description on how to install it here: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=1208

Good luck.

sorry, the link above is not that good, better take a look at http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Sidebar+Screenlet?content=63172

The "homepage" of the project is here: http://hendrik.kaju.pri.ee/screenlets/?q=node/63

Also, I was a bit hasty on the install instructions. You need to add the repository first. How to do that? Have a look here: http://hendrik.kaju.pri.ee/screenlets/?q=node/5
