vinceboy,
I'm glad to hear you would like to help! However, if you have concerns about loosing your data, you should not be using Gutsy (yet). If you would like to help, but need to ensure your current system continues to work until Gutsy is released, there are a number of options you could consider:

1) Install Gutsy on an old PC
2) Run Gutsy in a virtual machine (VMWare, QEmu, maybe even Xen...)
3) Contribute to Gutsy in other ways (documentation, artwork, advocacy, to name a few).

Having said all this, Gutsy shouldn't just go and delete all your data for no good reason.

   Regards,

Let me also add that the best way to preserve your data is to use your home directory to store it, and make a separate partition (or use a whole new disk) for it so that you can instruct gparted to leave it intact in case of a new installation from CD. This of course doesn't apply for a network upgrade, but I think that having a separate /home partition is a good habit anyhow (I do it).
