No Display

Asked by Keith

Hello all,

I am a new user of linux and have no idea to fix my current issue.

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit on my laptop which is a Toshiba X205-9359. The Video Card in the Toshiba is a Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT. After installing Ubuntu and loading into the OS, I discovered the update hardware option where you can install proprietary drivers for my graphics card, There is a Version 185 and a older version of the drivers to choose from, So I of course chose the Newest Recommended Version which is Version 185. I then activated that driver, After installation of that driver it asked me to reboot the machine. After rebooting it will no longer show a display after the boot process. My determination is the video card driver is incompatible with the OS. I didn't know how to fix this issue, So I went ahead and deleted the partition Ubuntu was installed on. Created a new partition and formatted it and then reloaded Ubuntu 9.10. After reloading the OS I tried installing the older version of the driver and that was also unsuccessful because I am now getting the same issue with No display after boot. I am at a loss and have no idea how to fix this issue. The only way I know how to resolve it is too delete partition, format and reload. However I would never be able to utilize the full use of my graphics card because the proprietary drivers don't work. If there is anyone that has had this problem and knows how to fix it please get back to me.

Thank you,
Keith

I forgot to mention that I also have Windows 7 installed on the laptop, And the graphics driver for my video card is loaded on there and Works fine. So I know my graphics card is not the problem.
