clearing old Ubuntu versions before loading latest upgrade

I now have three versions of ubuntu on my laptop, and it is running low on disk space! before I upgrade to the latest version, how do I get rid of 8.04 etc?

If you want to completely get rid of the old versions then make a back up of the relevant data and format the partition.
But be careful to not format the partition whose grub is loaded through MBR otherwise you won't be able to boot.

So you DON"T have to delete the old to bring in the new ???
