Flash does not work on Dell's Ubuntu pages

Asked by Josh Rhoderick

Ever since Dell started selling Ubuntu systems I've been hoping that the system building pages wouldl render correctly, but the flash elements have a strange quirk in which they show up momentarily and then disappear. This happens only on Dell's Ubuntu pages: http://www.dell.com/ubuntu. I started a forum post a while back and others have confirmed that this happens to them too, but I've so far been unable to determine why. Flash works on the rest of Dell's site, and it works on the vast majority of other sites I've tried. In the forum post (link can be found below), someone noted that this occurs on www.toyota.is as well. I've also tried Opera, and another forum poster tried SeaMonkey. All have the same behavior. Everything is updated on my system and I do not have desktop effects enabled.

Hi,

there is already an official bug report. See #91560.

Actually the problem resides in the nonfree flash plugin. As this is not open source there cannot much be done about it rather than forwarding this error to Adobe and hope that they'll fix it.

But there is hope: Probably in Ubuntu Gutsy there will be the first version of an open source flash player also.
