Karmic boots extremely slow on Dell Inspiron 1525 as compared with Jaunty, atleast 5 times slow

Asked by Farooq

I have noticed few other people complaining about the increase in Karmic boot time as compared with Jaunty. I first upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic via live update. My laptop used to boot in 20Sec measured using 'bootchart' on Jaunty. After the upgrade, boot time shoot up to 2 minutes. I thought a clean install of Karmic might help this. I then did a clean install of Karmic, but the boot time is like 1 min and between 5 to 8 seconds. I upgraded to Karmic thinking that boot time is further improved as was mentioned in the features, but found it otherwise. Here are my laptop specifications:-

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.40GHz, with 3.4 GB Ram, 320 GB harddisk with 80 GB partition dedicated to Karmic fir Ext4 file system and another 3.5 GB partition dedicated to swap.

Ubuntu gurus, can you help us improve this boot time?

Can you attach a bootchart capture of the booting process?

To Antonio's point above, please install bootchart. It is the best way to track down issues, at least at a high-level. To install from a terminal:
sudo apt-get install bootchart

Once it is installed, reboot. Now each time you boot, a chart showing all of the processes that start will be generated automatically, and the overall times. They will be stored in:
/var/log/bootchart

If you still have Jaunty installed, bootcharts from that would be great to have too, as a comparison.

Anotonio,

I could not find a way to attach any thing to this question and so I have attached thee bootchart graph and logs with this bug. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/88750
Before doing a fresh install, I did compared the graphs of Jaunty and Karmic live upgrade, and I have already mentioned their boot time difference above and that was the reason I thought of doing a fresh and clean installation of Karmic.

I don't see nothing rare at your bootchart. My Karmic installation in a similar hardware and configuration is like yours. I'll attach my bootchart log into the bug #475736. I don't feel Karmic to boot slower than Jaunty did.
