can not run Ubuntu 9.10 - no picture

So far I run Ubuntu 9.04 and all was fine. When I updated tu Ubuntu 9.10 the computer won't boot or I could hear the launch sound but could not see a picture. I tried a completely new installation as well, but it seems 9.10 just won't run on my machine.
I have a notebook with an Intel 855GM chipset.

Did you try editting your residual xorg.conf to use the vesa driver
