Easy way convert video files for creative zen v plus?

Asked by ravanwin

A friend has a "Creative Zen V Plus" mp3 player. He's using Gnomad2 to transfer files to/from it, but it seems that Gnomad doesn't transcode AVI files to the format that the zen can use. I'm afraid I don't even know what format his files are in, or what format the zen requires, but they're all different types of AVI file.

So I've been looking for a good, easy way to transcode avi's from one format to another. I found ffmpeg and mencoder, but the friend will need a graphical program. The best I found was avidemux, which seems to have the capabilties, but I can't honestly be sure, as the interface is confusing, and it only seemed to transcode the first few seconds of a file when I tried it.

Any suggestions about what I should recommend for him?

Nice guide! Useful.

Ravanwin: can you try playing with avidemux, and see if you can in fact create new files in different formats?

But I think you're going to have to re-open the question because, even if we can transcode the files with avidemux, we don't know what format to transcode them to for the Creative Zen V Plus. What should we select under the Audio, Video and Format headings? I tried to look up this information, but all it says on Creative's specifications page is "Video Support: Transcoded Video Format". Does anyone know what it needs to be?

P.S. here is Creative's specs page http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=15306&nav=1

I also found a wikipedia page for the product, but still don't know what video format to set: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_ZEN

Can you help with this problem?
