9.10 :: Applied latest upgrade after 9:10 install - now system won't boot

Asked by Ross Cameron

Hi

Upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04. Then applied the latest update and disaster!

The update process did say it was a partial update.

Re-booted the system and it goes to the login screen (non X - tty01) and just flickers. Can't actually login because something else is consuming some of the keystrokes.

Thank you for the help in advance.

Problem solved with a bit of research:

It was an nVidia driver problem caused by the software sources not being up to date.

Solution to fixing the nVidia driver issue can be found here: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-nvidia-graphics-drivers-190-42-in-ubuntu-karmicjauntyintrepidhardy.html#more-2454

But, first, you'll need to login and the main issue might be that you can't even login.

I solved that by ssh'ing in from another system and stopping 'gdm' (stop gdm) as described in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459

Hope that helps others.

This is helpful, but when I try to download those drivers, it can't find the package. It's on my brother's computer and here's what it says:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia/ppa/ubuntu/dists/karmic/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

That seems to be the only problem. Do you know how to fix this? I don't really know much about computers.

Installed Ubunta 9.10. After reboot a black screen is blinking: "Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" I then hit Enter, and I get this message: "error: no such device: 58cf44b7-7fad-4aebf-b5df-5791bd6564ca press any key to continue" I press any key and then the same "Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" screen appears again. What do I do next??
