Installing Firefox 1.07 onto HHedgehog

Asked by Tony (aqk)

I just DLed Firefox 1.07 onto my Ubuntu 5.04 system, and when I attemp to install it to my Home folder, it craps out with message 'Couldnt find XPISTUB library'.

When I try to install it to the ETC lib, (Thats probably where it SHOULD go, overwriting the old 1.02) it says I am "not authorized".
I am the only user on this desktop, and I presume I have root privileges.
Is there a few simple sudo commands that will allow me to install it?
(excuse please; I am new at Ubuntu) ;-)

Try installing the Firefox 1.07 package from the official hoary-backports repository. You should avoid installing nonpackaged software.

I think it is in there. But if not. Do you miss features in the hoary version? Even though the version number is not the latest; all the security updates are applied (same as 1.07).

If you need the new version because you miss features you might want to consider upgrading to Ubuntu 5.10.

You should be able to find information on adding the backport repository on the wiki. https://wiki.ubuntu.com

OK. Thanx!

I've ordered Ubutu 5.10 but I thought in the meantime I'd get 'a jump' and install the new FF 1.07 on my present HHHog 5.06.

The present FF 1.02 seems to be just fine; I will live with it until I install the new Ubuntu.
Case closed.
