Pulseaudio fails to initialize ICE1712 chipsets in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by ubby

I have a Terratec DMX 6fire soundcard and I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit) but have no sound.
Below I have screenshots from the settings:

I don't know how I can get the sound working in Ubuntu 9.10.
Any help?

The strange thing is that the soundcard worked correctly with Ubuntu 7.10 and 9.04.
With the introduction of Pulse audio in Ubuntu 8.04 the sound also didn't work and was still not solved with Ubuntu 8.10.
But with Ubuntu 9.04 the problems were solved so I don't understand why it doesn't work now.

Please try this solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/178442/comments/30

If that does not help, please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. and add this line to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
file:

options snd-ice1712 enable=1 index=0 model=dmx6fire

3. Save the change to the alsa-base.conf file.

4. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to
Terratec DMX 6fire (Alsa mixer)

5. reboot and retest sound

6. Make sure to unmute and increase volume for the Master, PCM and Front volume channels in alsa-mixer and gnome-alsamixer

The solution didn't work.
4. There is no option to change in Sound and change everything to
Terratec DMX 6fire (Alsa mixer) because as you can see in the screenshots there are not many options.

I think this is a bug that needs to be solved.
BUt I hope there is a temporary solution because I think it will take a long time before Ubuntu will solve this bug.

I suggest upgrading to ALSA 1.0.21 using this procedure:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

Then run the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic

Then reboot and retest sound.

I now have turned on the soundcard chipset from the Motherboard and have sound.
Hopefully Ubuntu will fix the bug for the Terratec DMX 6fire soundcard.
The implementation of Pulse audio is not good in Ubuntu if I have to believe this blog:

Pulseaudio is uninstalled (taken as read).

The annoying thing with my 6Fire is that in 9.04 it worked fine. In 9.10 (64 bit U. Studio) it sometimes works (which suggests that the driver is OK) but after a while it just stops. And that's it until the next reboot. But then it's hit and miss (mostly miss).

If it never worked I might be able to work out why. But I can't test things if it's sometimes going to work when I don't atually change anything. For instance, it's working fine just now. An hour ago it wasn't.

ubby: How did you "turn on the soundcard chipset from the Motherboard" ?

@RogerP: In the BIOS.
When you start your computer you can press "Del" to enter the BIOS.

This is NOT solved.

Changing the only BIOS setting I could find did nothing.

Following this howto http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/10/29/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/
which involves installing alsa 1.0.21 got it working for a while. It survived about 3 reboots before it stopped.

I don't understand why it works sometimes and not all the time.

When it doesn't work, System -> Preferences -> Sound gives: "Waiting for sound system to respond"

Restarting alsa, reconfiguring alsa makes no difference.

For the record Open Sound Systems works; no intermittent behavior. However, OSS has no reliable MIDI support.

Basically it seems there is no longer any support for the Terratec DMX 6fire in Ubuntu. Open Sound System works (you have to compile it) but only a few applications work with OSS and MIDI support is hopeless. Alsa, with ICE1712, works intermittently if at all. I have tried compiling the drivers but I would advise using Windows for music apps or buy a different card. Pity; I cannot find a better card on the market without paying huge sums. I bought my daughter a Focusrite Saffire, it cost more but is nowhere near as nice as the 6Fire.

BTW I would strongly advise against OSS 4. It's not free, they promise to provide support but have never once acknowledged an email from me.
