problem with HPLIP for HP Photosmart C8180 on Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Manuel Lino

The HPLIP provided with Ubuntu 9.10 for C8180, gives only basic printing. No scan.
Looking for the HPLIP for the C8180 on HP website, and selecting the Ubuntu version 9.10, the only option available is to do a manual installation of HPLIP-3.9.8. And following the installation instructions, it fails with the message "couldn't find libjpeg". I can see in Synaptic Package Manager that libjpeg62 is installed by default installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

I recommend you install the hplip from the repos which will install everything the new installer needs, you can then install the new version.

Going through the Synaptic Package Manager, I noticed that hplip-3.9.8 exists in the repos. So I've marked for reinstallation and installation everything regarding hplip-3.9.8, and applied. The situation maintains. Xsane can't find any scanning devices. My question now is, once I've installed hplip-3.9.8 from the repos, should I attempt the manual installation from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install_wizard/index.html
Here's the message I get after selection of OS and Printer and before dowload:

The following pages will help you download HPLIP.

First, we will determine if the version of HPLIP included with your operating system will work with your printer and if your printer is supported by HPLIP.

Please answer the following questions before clicking Next.

Step 3: Select Printer Type:

Step 4: Select Printer Model:

Step 5: Click Next:

You have selected Ubuntu 9.10 using the HP Photosmart c8180 All-in-one Printer.

Ubuntu 9.10 supplies HPLIP 3.9.2 and it does support your printer.

As the version of HPLIP supplied with your operating system supports your printer, you may continue to use that version of HPLIP.

You may now optionally download the latest version of HPLIP to get access to new features and bug fixes.

Then no need to use that as the 9.10 version supports your printer.

That's what I thought inicially. But then why can I not scan?
Previously, and until yesterday, I was using Ubuntu 8.04. I've dowloaded the hplip-3.9.8 installer and I had all the funcionality of the C8180 including scanning. The question then is what I should do to have all that funcionality.

Thanks again.

I apologyse. I must have done some typo erro running the ./configure during the manual installation. Did it again and it worked flawlessly. Everything is working. From scanning to having the HP icon in the upper tray beside the volume control as it should, from where I can launch the HP Device Manager.
Conclusion: On Ubuntu 9.10, if you want to install hplip-3.9.8 for either psc 2510 or c8180, follow the instructions on the site previously mentioned. It is so tested for Ubuntu 9.10.
Thanks actionparsnip for your time.
