password

Hi, my mom just bought a computer that has ubuntu installed on it, I've figured out the user name but don't know what the password is. I'm not exactly a computer expert and the instructions on doing a password reset haven't worked for me (or I'm just doing it wrong) can anyone please explain how I would be able to recover a password or set a new one in terms that a computer dummy would be able to understand? Thx!
