Attempting to put in blank dvd-r, receive "Cannot mount volume, invalid mount option"

Asked by KrystollMeth

I can easily put in a commercial DVD (software/movies) but come across a problem when putting in a DVD-R (blank). Haven't tried one with data on it yet though. Once I put this in, after approximately 30 seconds I receive an error saying "Cannot mount volume" and as a reason it shows "Invalid mount option". Also using the kernel that ends in 16 (apologies for not remembering the rest). Looked all over, forums, Google, etc. but couldn't find any help. I used to not have a problem, it would appear right on the desktop and I could easily burn to it. Let me know what info might be needed. I'm including outputs I've seen requested on here for a similar problem below.

"fstab" output below

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

"dmesg | tail" output below (after inserting a blank dvd-r)

Through my searches I have found 2 things of note for this problem. 1, several people have acpi problems when they disable it (one that stands out is a non-functioning sound card). 2, some people have tried higher version kernels or what I assume to be a 386 kernel (whereas what I have on my GRUB loader is listed as generic, this one shows as 386). I tried that kernel but could only come to a prompt after receiving an error stating the the x-server for my nvidia drivers had crashed.

So, as for anything else, let me know what may be needed and also any steps to fix I'll most likely need a dummies version of it (copy&paste, step by step, etc.).

Additionally, I have also found that there are several others having this problem, on Feisty in particular. Thanks in advance for help.

Thanks for this question.

A blank DVD or CD has no filesystem on it. A device can only be mounted if there is a filesystem on it. Hence the error message when it tries to automount.

You can still burn the DVD with the burning software.

I hope this helps

I have Feisty installed on my PC and my laptop and it will auto load blank CD & DVD just fine no problem under fstab they are both listed as /dev/scd0. I also installed Feisty on my inlaw Laptop and she has the same problem it will load the blank CD no problem but won't load the blank DVD and before some one ask it is a CD/DVD rom and I did burn 2 DVD using nerolinux with it... it is listed in fstab as /dev/hdc
