I don't think grub is issue in your case.Bootable CD should boot regardless of OS on HDD.Is disc damaged? If you still want to remove grub read http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p18.html#MbrFix.exe

You actually have booted successfully at that point, and the message comes from the running CD. In other words, there is no need to remove grub. You just need to press a key on the keyboard like it says to boot the XP installer. They apparently didn't want people to end up in the installer by accident just because they left the install CD in, but I've seen that behavior confuse people before.

If you don't press a key, it's supposed to resume the boot process and turn control over to the bootloader on the hard drive, but I've seen it fail to do that before and leave a blank screen, just like you describe.

BTW, reinstalling XP will overwrite your current grub bootloader, and you will have to restore it (or set up the Windows bootloader to load Ubuntu) if you want to continue using your Ubuntu install.

Can you help with this problem?
