file access and network printing on Windows XP

Asked by weemooseus

Ok, I have Ubuntu 7.04 on one computer, XP on the other. I have done the following:

1. Installed Samba and configured the administrator to be a user, checked the samba box so it will start on boot
2. Used the network wizard in XP to configure file and print sharing

I can see both boxes from Ubuntu, however the Windows box will not let me look at shared information or the printer.

In windows, I cannot see the Ubuntu machine on the network at all.

When I try to install a printer in Ubuntu, it does not work/

What ports should be open in my router?

Thanks,

Carl

Thank you for your question.

I had similar problem may be you did already but :

1) Do you use the same workgroup to the ubuntu ?
2) Did you shared your folder in ubuntu from system->administration->shered folders ?

As far as I know, I have the same workgroup MSHOME and shared folders are turned on. I am new to Unbuntu, (or any version of Linux), as I have just installed it on a refurbished machine. I am having no trouble using the Internet, so I know the cards are working.

The machines are not on same ethernet? There's a router between them?

Are you running some firewall software on xp and/or Ubuntu?

Actually, I don't think the router is the problem and yes, the machines are on the same ethernet. I am running Zone Alarm on the PC, but I have the local network protection turned off until I get the printer/file problem solved. The Ubuntu is not running any firewall.

Installed xchat tonight to see if I could chat with someone and get some help.

No luck there:

 End of /MOTD command.

Not sure why I was banned -- interesting.

Update:

Although I have not figured out IRC, yet, I did get my file sharing and printer working.
