Hard Drive Detection Problem While Installing Ubuntu

Asked by AvicusUK

Hi, I'm new to Linux and I was trying to do a clean install with Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite A200 Notebook and as soon as it was trying to detect the hard drive it said it cannot detect any hard drives.

Please help. I was looking forward to using Linux System, but now I'm stuck

Thanks

I have two questions. One, which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install, and Two, do you know which IDE or SATA chipset your notebook has. It may be that the version you are installing does not recognize that SATA chipset (so you could try a newer version), or it could be a driver issue.

When I downgraded from Vista to XP I was forced to slipstream the Installation disc because XP did not have the sata driver. My Hard Drive is Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA 2850

The Ubuntu I am trying to install is 8.04

I would try 9.04 (or 9.10 that will be released Thursday) and see if it works better. I had some problems with 8.04 detecting some of my SATA drives, and the later releases have worked much better.

In addition, you do not have to install in order to check whether your hard drive will be detected. Simply boot up to the live cd environment and try to access the hard drive. If it is seen, then you should be able to install Ubuntu to it easily.

I am most interested to hear how that went for you on 9.10. Also, if you boot from the CD and to a try first. Load it up then go into system and gparted and see if it see the hard drive in there. Then try the install from the icon on the desktop and see if it still does not see it in the install portion. This is what I am experiencing on an old machine that worked fine with an older copy of Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
