How do you decrypt coded email?

Asked by Ken Johnson

In the last seven days I installed three public keys on my computer and have even signed the CodeofConduct. Some email has been received since saying that decryption failed because secret key is not available.

INow, how do I find the secret key and how do I apply it to decrypt my messages that are are still encrypted?

Thank you all --- this is not a bug but a request for help

How did you "Install" the public keys?

Zach,

I do not remember how I did it. It gave me a key to sign the Ubuntu Code
of Conduct --and then I found three coded messages in my InBox that I
could not decrypt, which is why I have turned to you people for help.

When you created the key, you had to create a passkey to use for decrytping. There is a page following the one on how to sign the code of conduct that explains it more thoroughly.

In order to get to the bottom of things, I am going to delete both key and passkey and start over with your help - ie- guidance.

My memory fails me sometimes, and this is one of them. Can you give me the URL to set up a key/passkey?

Ok to make a OpenPGP or OpenGPG key you go to Applications -> Accessories -> Passwords and Encryption Keys. Choose "File", choose "New", and then choose, "PGP Key". It's easy after that. When you have completed those steps let me or Larry Jordan know.

Larry and Zach,
Your request is done. Now how do I use it to break encoded msg's?

Done.

However, I have an uneasy feeling about it. How do you know if a key has been bcst to the public and how do you determine if you have a secret key?

I never got an answer to my basic question, to wit how do I use the keys to decode an incoming message?

You probably have to "install" (i.e. to declare) the keys (through the options/preferences settings) of your email client.

I used it for google mail and Firefox, in this case I installed an extension for Firefox called FireGPG (works for Google mail, other webmails I don't know)

Can you help with this problem?
