Skype video doesn't work without terminal command

Asked by NakiMum

Oh my gosh, here I go again to get Skype working with video.

I need Terminal open with the following command LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
my problem with that is - yet another window open on my already full desktop.

I've tried adding the command to the Start-up programs, opting to remember the applications chosen, but it doesn't work.

Anyone out there with some advice for me?

I'm not using my built-in webcam as it's got VERY poor graphics at night. I use a USB webcam made for using at night (that's when I make most of my Skype calls)

TIA everyone ;-)

Hi,

Have you tried to make a new application launcher with this command? Perhaps "open in terminal" may help.

Hi Arnaudus

I get this error message

There was an error creating the child process for this terminal, problem is it still opens a terminal window which I was trying to avoid

If you just need to the variable you can edit your main menu (System → Preferences → Main Menu) and enter the full command incl. the variable.

Hi Thomas

I kept getting error messages, no matter what I tried. Looks like I'm stuck with having a terminal window open. It's just a bother when I do updates or installs, they don't work with the terminal open.

Txs anyway

I found this in the Skype community forum
It works a charm and is very easy to put together.

Just look out for the post from Gary Rowe and follow it step by step. Easy enough for a newbie like me to understand LOL
