avi to mpeg converter

could some one please walk me through installing a program that will convert ".avi"(Xvid) to and "mpeg" file or another way to transfer these avi's to DVD.

You need to ensure that you have the proper codecs installed, and a good progam to use is Avidemux (Available in the repositories as well). There's a walkthrough here:

For Major codecs installation you can use Automatix2 which provides an easy GUI interface to install some of the latest popular software(depends on its repos) you can get it on www.getautomatix.com/ and installation guide is on www.getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation&Itemid=38
