preferred update servers

Asked by Julian Pitt

when i access the software sources through System-Administration-Software Sources, I am unable to select the best server for my location. On the Ubuntu Software tab, I click on the drop down arrow and select "Download from Other", in the following "Choose a download server" dialogue United Kingdom is already selected. I then click "Select Best Server", whereupon 291 server locations are pinged to ascertain the best one for me to use. It starts off ok and gets as far as saying "284 of 286 tests completed, whereupon it goes no further. If i leave it for hours it will go no further and I am forced to kill the process. I am using Jaunty 9.04 with Gnome 2.26.1. I have a screen shot if needed but cannot see how to attach it to this report.

Where are you based? Just choose it manually if it crashes.
So if you are in the UK pick that or the main server if you want.

I have now logged this as a bug. There is no point in just choosing the location that is local, the best server is based on network speed which is not always going to be the closest server. Choosing the server manually would negate the point of testing for the best one.

Can you help with this problem?
