No you can use the alternate cd for karmic and upgrade using that. You can continually upgrade all you like. The hard disk will have partitions or your Ubuntu install is REALLY fucked and will not boot.

You can upgrade online with:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

When 9.10 is released, the release notes will have detailed information on upgrading via CD. It will probably be similar to the process for upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 via CD:

Tamjid,
afaik shipit doesn't provide the alternate.
e.g.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades#AlternateUpgrade

If your /home is on a separate partition nothing much to worry, but in principle backup is recommended, upgrade or not.

Including GRUB_2

Can you help with this problem?
