I suggest you to try to install the Ubuntu desktop edition daily live cd near to be published in pre release state.

Installing this release and doing regular updates and upgrades you will get easily the final release.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Please note the daily release is updated regularly all the days and now is near to be upgraded, so to avoid wrong download: please wait until the 17 Oct 2009 release will be published.

Thank you

installed latest version and updated. The ubiquity problem appears to have gone but system still hangs. At one of the crashes I got on the screen
[100.166309] BUG: unable to handle kernel

if I boot the system in single user mode and select the netroot option to go to a shell prompt the system comes up OK. If I then type startx the xwindows system starts (as root) and appears to be stable. So the problem seems to be associated with multiuser mode. When the system crashes there does not seem to be anything in the logs indicating an error.
