Asked by Daniel

I just installed a logitech quickcam web cam and can't get it to work. I ran "lsusb" and it shows the web cam listed but how do I get it up and running?

Update: I ran "ls /dev/video*" and got "/dev/video0" . I tried to open this file in file browser but it says there are no programs to open it. Also, I ran "ls /dev/audio*" and got " /dev/audio" and "/dev/audio1". This file could not be opened either.

Make sure the permissions in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules are correct. You are maybe affected by this bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/431303.

Good luck

I don't have that file (/etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules). I have the folder /etc/udev/rules.d but it contains different files.
Do I need the 40-permissions.rules file?

You should try to create it and see if it helps.

I don't know what version of Ubuntu you are using but I know that there was a lot of progress done in Jaunty and Karmic. Maybe you should try one of these with liveCD. Karmic is expected to turn stable at the end of October.

It seems to be working OK now. I installed Cheese and it works fine with that.
