That sound like you tried to install the Windows versions of your hardware's drivers.
That is not the way is going to work. You will need Linux drivers.
Ubuntu Linux contain most of the drivers required for most hardware setups.
If you are satisfied with the included PDF readers you can install the packet acroread via Synaptics.

Downloaded Linux Adobe Reader (a .bin file) and saved it to my desktop. Received the same message when I tried to open it and install. Am I missing something?

You have to make the .bin executable and run it with root privileges to install it.

 cd /path/where/is/the/file
 chmod +x FILE.bin
 sudo ./FILE.bin

Then follow the on screen instructions.

As the blog says "navigate to the folder where the file was downloaded to"

As Simon Déziel says "cd /path/where/is/the/file"

You do know how to navigate? Use ls (that's l as in lemur and s as in sierra) to list where you are. Use cd to change directory. For me my desktop is at: /home/alan/Desktop
