From XP to first time linux!

Asked by Sociopath

I'm switching from Windows XP to Linux (I am already downloading Ubuntu) . However I don't know which one would be the better choice for my system. Currently I'm running;

1 GB of RAM
2.93 Gig Dual core
72 GB HD
Windows XP Home

What would be my best option for this situation and would i be better off running Linux off a CD-ROM or straight from the hard drive?

Welll, if you're downloading Ubuntu, chances are you're downloading the LiveCD, which means you can just poke around the CDRom and see how you like things. If you like it, you can always install it with dual boot for windows. As for installing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu; it really doesn't matter, because you can actually install them afterwards onto the same system. IE- You install Ubuntu, but you can also use the repositories to install the Kubuntu Desktop, or Xubuntu desktop, without having to download CD's and do another install. Makes it quite nice and easy to switch those window managers.

It's a matter of personal preference on which Desktop Environment/Window Manager you want to use. There's quite a few guides to dual booting that are kicking around Ubuntu Forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org) or just taking a look through google, should you want to go that route.

Hope this helps!
Regards,
Justin

I installed Ubantu on my desktop computer and gave them my username and password. However, when the program starts it asks for my username and password and I give it exactly like I should, but it keeps giving me the message that it is not the right username or password so it will not open. How do I fix this?

If youy want to, you may change the look and feel of your desktop so it looks like this:

or like this:

Your desktop may look however you want to... its the Ubuntu Linux flexibility
