Software Installation

Asked by Kachra Petty

Hi,

I manage more that 20 systems Ubuntu 9.4 installed using likewise. I have domain scenario and the users uses their user name and password to login in the system. Here a problem is that I have to install the softwares say zend, spark, ie, EMS MySQL and PosgreSQL for every user in that home directory, so when a new user comes to that system, I also have to do that process again. Is there any place to install the all softwares which can used by any users any time. In windows system, there is a place called "Program Files" through which any domain user can use the software without any problem.

Please, please help me out from this.

Thanks,
Kachra Petty.

Here is an old question about running an application by multiple users on a system. I think is what you need.

Good luck.

Under Linux the home directory is not the best choice to install software. Programs are typically place at various location in the /usr directory. Different parts are stored at different subfolder other parts are also stored at different places: (e.g. configuration in /etc). You can use Synaptic to get an impression of it. Just open the properties of an installed packet and see the installed files.
Most Linux software independs from it's form of distribution (packet, source...) will this structures by default. Just install it as normal.
If you are installing software that has to resist in the users home, you should place is also in /etc/skel/. All new user'S homes will be derived from this directory.
If you are still unsure about a specific software packet, just open a new question with details here.
