PDF Speak on Ubuntu

Asked by lyn

is there a way on Ubuntu 8.04 to have a PDF speak the text?
on microsoft you could get a PDF to speak by doing CTRL+Shift +V. it doesn't seem to work on Ubuntu.
in Synaptic Package Manager there is a program there called Espeak which is marked as installed but I can't work out how to activate it.
does anyone know how to make a PDF speak either through Espeak or some other way please?

espeak doesn't support natively the reading of pdf files. You have to first transform the pdf file in a text file. Here is how to do it:

http://wiki.soslug.org/wiki/espeak

and the official documentation on how to use it:

http://espeak.sourceforge.net/commands.html

Good luck.

thank you Cristi Nistor. I had a look at those links. I found them difficult. I don't want to just put in a sentence and have it read. I would like to have whole documents read. there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do it with Espeak.
the Adobe Reader I think is only for windows or MAC. so I don't see a soluntion there either.
if you have any other info please let me know.
thanks again for your reply.

Well, you can install the Acrobat Reader from here http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/ (chose Linux as OS) and use Read Out Loud : http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/8.0/Standard/help.html?content=WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d15.html )maybe you are familiar with it)

Good luck.
