DVD-ROM Eject button won't work with disc in drive

Asked by Moe Lemieux

When I put a movie in the DVD-ROM drive it plays alright, but when I hit the Eject button nothing happens. The only way I can retrieve the disc is to go back to the Desktop, right-click the drive symbol, and then click Eject Volume. What's going on?

The DVD playing program might be locking the drive.

This problem is linked to bug #84046. A fix had been released today, but it was discovered that certain types of discs could still not be ejected by pressing the hardware eject button, as you have found. I do not know the status of another fix. When I first reported this, I had to restart to ejecct the disc.

Joe, I hit the hyperlink you gave me but when I get to the website I can't figure out how to get the fix. I hit every button and hyperlink I thought would work but no luck.
And Delan, I can't figure out what to do with the answer you gave me. I went into
Administration but quickly got bogged down. Can you give me more detail?

Moe,
The package is devicekit-discs. In install or upgrade, go to System->Administartion-_Synapic Package Manager, and search for devicekit-discs. If alreadsy installed, there should be a small icon in the check box to indicate an upgrade is available. Click the check box and select mark for upgrade, and Apply. Let me know if you still have a problem finding the fix. It looks like I gave you an incorrect number for the bug. It is bug #397734 . Sorry fr the mistake.

Joe,
I went into Synaptic but could not find devicekit-discs. I did however find just plain " devicekit" and also " devicekit-power"and below each an identical entry with " -doc " tacked on. Should I apply the upgrade to either or both of these?

Try from a terminal window:
sudo apt-get install devicekit-disks

It just worked for me, although it told me the latest version was already installed. And I again made a mistake in my reply. The package is devicekit-disks with a "k". You should now probably find it in Synapic Package Manager. Sorry for all the confusion. This is not my full-time job.

Joe,
I just tried from Terminal and got the error message " couldn't find package devicekit-disks". Then I went to Synaptic and looked again but could only find "devicekit" and "devicekit-power". It just occurred to me are we running the same version of Ubuntu? I originally installed 8.10 from a CD and then, as I believe, upgraded to 9.04 online. Any more ideas, Joe?

Moe:
I am running on Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-13. The package devicekit-disks must be new to 9.10. I have no suggestions other than you might upgrade to 9.10. Maybe someone else reading this question may have other suggestions. Sorry that I have been unable to solve your problem. If you plan on staying on 9.04, you might consider writing a bug report so that the developers are aware they have a problem in 9.04. That doesn't solve your immediate problem.

Joe,
A week ago when I went looking for Ubuntu 9.10 I thought it said that it won't be available until Oct. 23 or something. I guess that means that you're using a beta version while waiting for the official version to come out. Any real risks associated with doing that?

Moe:
First, there has been a new bug Bug #448921 documenting the current problems with the eject button, and it applies to 9.0.4 . So you might want to keep an eye on this to see if and when a fix is going to happen for 9.0.4 .As far as 9.10 is concerned, I have been on it for about two weeks and it is fairly stable, in my opinion. There have been a few crashes of various processes after restarting, but nothing to too bad. It depends on how long you have been on 9.0.4 and how stable you feel your current situation is. There is no real risk. There have been a number of problems that I have seen from this forum onperforming a fresh install of the Karmic beta from a LiveCD in the area of grub2 (grand unified bootloader version 2). When you upgrade to 9.10 from 9.0.4 grub 2 is Not installed.

Joe,
Thanks for your very generous help with this problem, and I guess I'll keep an eye out for a fix to the bug you mentioned. And since I just installed 9.04 a couple of weeks ago and am still working my way thru it, I'm inclined to wait for the official 9.10 !

Martin,
I'm not clear what you mean by
" attach /tmp/dk-dump.txt here."
How do I "attach", and is " here" part of what I'm attaching?
Or is "here" a spot where I'm attaching something, or a point in time?
