Need a decent xhtml editor

Asked by Gazmus

Hey, Ive only recently swapped over to ubuntu from windows. I dont really know any of the programs I can use for it yet so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I need an html/xhtml/css editor, maybe just with syntax highlighting and code checking. Something like topstyle would be perfect though a simple text editor with some syntax highlighting would be good as well, an ubuntu version of notepad++. A javascript editor would be nice too, though I think I can just use netbeans for that, its not great but Im at least familiar with it after learning java.

Ive not done much coding at all recently, notepad++ and topstyle were by far my favourites back then.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Gaz.

I use "gedit" for it. Just go in "gedit" to the preference window and you can enable all sorts of things. In the view menu you can activate syntax highlighting.

gedit is installed by default as a basic text-editor bu can easily be set to be a powerful html/css/javascript/php(end more) editor. its like notepad++

My only gripe about gedit is that there's no way I know to keep the same indentation on the next line. By this I mean if the current line is e.g. two tabs indented, the next line when I press enter should be the same indentation so I don't have to press <enter><tab><tab> then type.

I use gedit most of the time, but I lean towards Notepad2 ( http://flosfreeware.ch/notepad2.html ) on Wine.

This a review of three HTML editors: Screem, Bluefish and Quanta Plus. Under Windows I appreciate well Notepad++ which is fast an reliable (has smart tab indentation). Under Linux I use gedit (default text editor) and Bluefish.

Good luck.

Delan Azabani,
In "gedit" you can enable "automatic indentation" in the Preferences window under the tab Editor.

Thanks a lot for that Gerwin, I should have looked more carefully at gedit. Now I'm back to my good old friend. :)
