How to retrieve detailed boot and installation logs of an ubuntu release

Asked by John2

Hi all,

In the attempt to shed some light over an extremely troublesome Karmic installation, I would like to retrieve the installations and the boot logs, maybe through a Live CD, so that I can use it as a starting point to ask for information in the forum.

How can I get these data?

My problem is that every time I install Ubuntu 9.10 the boot process hangs right before the welcome screen during the post-installation reboot. It happens both with 32 and 64 bit edition.

Thank you in advance.

All system related log files are stored in /var/log/ so the easiest way to get them would be to boot a live disk, mount the partition that contains /var/log/ which would be / (root) in most cases and copy the files somewhere else.
