Partition a 50GB for Ubuntu

Asked by mguzman

Hi all, I have a 500GB HD with Vista on it with 8GB of RAM. I've partition a 50GB free space for Ubuntu. Everytime I try to install, the automatic install it doesn't let me chose the 50GB partition created; it wants to use the next free available space.
Question:
1- If I chose manual parition - what files systems do I need to partition ...eg.. swap, root, home?
2- Given my scenario - what size's would you recommend for each file system?
3- I have 8GB of RAM - does the swap need to be 16GB? swap file double the amount of RAM (rule of thumb - read that somewhere)

Thank you very much for taking the time to read and if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Cheers!!!

I am sorry to be such a pain, but I forgot one last question. My pc is a 64bit architecture.
4- Should I install Ubuntu 64 or 32 would be fine? How stable is the 64 bit architecture?

Thank you again...

Cheers!

I will do it like this (maybe someone know better solution)

1. root =10GB ext3 mountpoint /
2.home=rest of free space except ext3 mountpoint /home
3.swap =2GB

With your ram I will go for 64 bit architecture.

32 bit OS only can manage 4 gb of ram you should go for 64 in order to use all the Ram you have
