kernel 2.6.28-15-generic for 9.04 will not allow my IBM T30 to boot. I can boot from the grb loader on 2.6.28-11-generic.

Asked by Dan

My thinkpad T30 precipitously would not boot any more. I have been running ubuntu solely since gusty on this laptop. It would stop booting and stall. I thought that my HD was going out so I put in another I have. I had an old 8.04 iso disk, CD version already, so I loaded it and then proceeded to go through the normal updates via the update manager, including new distro updates. Everything worked just as it had before with the other HD perfectly.

After updating to 9.04 the computer was still running fine. The very next round of updates per the update manager ran fine. I restarted the computer as directed. The bios runs fine and the grub loader works okay but then the computer just stops on the boot screen. This is exactly what was happening before. It just stops booting and just sits there. I left it for a1/2 hour once and nothing happened, it was still stuck at the same point in the boot process as the previous HD had done.

So I d-loaded the 9.04 iso on another computer and burned it. I did a complete re-install of 9.04 and again it worked fine until the very next series of updates. The very same problem started occuring again. Up on start up I went into the GRUB loader and booted the kernel 2.6.28-11-generic and the computer booted just fine and the T30 works as it should. The kernel 2.6.28-15-generic was first on the boot list so naturally it was the default kernel to boot to. I would assume that it is this kernel that is the problem.

I looked through the kernel patches and saw none for a thinkpad T30. I also learned that kernel patches are specific to manufacturer as well.

Please look at the problem let me know if I can provide any other information.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi m8, I 've got the same problem. I have an Acer Aspire one and I installed Ubuntu a few days ago, just in the place of my windows starter... not a good idea... after a few time working more or less well, and after downloading and installing some updates and have a lot of problems trying to install my wifi (broadcom 4310) .. Ubuntu stopped booting properly, first not booting at all, after some tries finally booting... but allways having problems till today, Iḿ running ubuntu in live mode cos In installed mode do not boot at all, just a black window and a flashing stick... no matter how many time I wait, stick is allways there... I tried Ubuntu in order to stop using windows, tired of paying a lot of money for software and giving money to Daddy Bill, despite He donate 50% of this money to humanitary causes... I'm not glad at all now, I found no manuals or texts explaining how to make it easier, the instalation in Aspire one, for example... just a lot of discording people saying to use the console and write diferent commands that in most cases do not work. I will be very happy if someone can tell me how I have to do to run Ubuntu well and solve my problem. Thx vm. Iǘe got a mail. <email address hidden> if someone wants to reply me :D thx again

Habla espanol? What kind of processor does your Aspire have? If it is an intel processor make sure you were not loading the iso image for AMD processors and vice a versa, if you have an AMD processor make sure that you are not loading an intel iso image. What version of Ubuntu are you running? What model is you aspire? Are you dead set on running strictly Ubuntu or would you be open to another version of Ubuntu called Linux Mint? It comes out of the box ready to use. A good option for first time linux users who are not familiar with compiling software and knowing which packages to load. I loaded it on a family members Aspire Netbook the other day because windows crashed. He has zero linux exposure and he loves it. It installed smoothly and everything worked as it should, except the bluetooth, I did not have time to trouble shoot that.

I had to have some major help. Certain brands require certain trouble shooting which is way beyond my scope as you can tell from the original bug: Bug #442364. What you may want to do is gather the information I suggested and post it here. Then we can see exactly what we are dealing with. 8*)

Can you help with this problem?
